HAPPY SOLSTICE!
Winter Solstice…a still point. A pause. Through the Fall the days have been growing shorter, earlier evening darkness that lasts longer into the early morning hours. Winter Solstice, usually December 21st, marks the pause point, this deepening into darkness stops. It is the shortest day and longest night of the year. From this resting place we begin turning towards the light and gradually longer days.
The Solstice tradition has roots in ancient peoples who lived close to the earth and the rhythms of nature. Celts, Norsemen, Pagans and many others have Solstice traditions to honor the return of the Sun.
Traditionally, this is a beautiful time to come together with friends and loved ones, mark the end of Fall and the true beginning of the Winter season. Gather around the fire, sing, dance & tell stories…share food & drink.
Ideas for a family Solstice celebration:
- Create an alter space with candles to honor the return of the sun – include sun colored stones, images, art etc.
- Make an evergreen wreath or decorate a Yule tree (traditionally an outside pine tree)
- Give back to nature
- Create a quiet space to observe silence
During these extra quiet times of social distancing, I really love the practice of beginning my day with lighting a candle – something so simple has sparked a meaningful time to take stock on so many levels. As the warmth of the light spreads from a small single source so does my waking and reflection…working consciousness into the darker corners of my awareness. Sometimes I remember a dream, or have time to be with thoughts and feelings unprocessed from the prior days. It doesn’t have to be at my alter, some times it is on the kitchen counter while making my morning coffee.
Rituals of pausing, turning inward and listening to the quiet within are a primal, natural calling in us this time of year. In response to this deep call in me I have created a GIFT for you. A Mythic Morning sharing just this process of lighting a candle…I hope you click, download the recording, share with friends if you like.
Sending you such warmth & love today and throughout your winter season. May you find warmth in all that you hold dear.
Deep blessings to you & yours.
